Electric power systems in Sweden and the rest of Europe are currently undergoing major changes in both the generation and distribution of electric power.
- Traditional energy sources will be replaced by a large number of wind and solar power plants.
- Transmission and distribution systems must be expanded to cope with increased consumption of electric power in a fossil-free society.
- Increased cabling
- The number of inverter-controlled loads for e.g. production of hydrogen, charging of electric cars, etc. will increase.
The consequences of such a change will be:
- Larger frequency and voltage variations
- Higher harmonic distortion
- Transients with higher amplitude and longer duration
- Higher risk of harmonics and ferro-resonances
- Higher risk of breakdowns and equipment failures
In order to achieve the planned transition with unchanged operational availability, new power quality solutions are required in the form of:
- Effective filtering and blocking of harmonics at the source of interference
- Filter solutions for high frequency harmonics (supratones)
- Damping filters to counteract harmonics, ferro-resonances and coupling transients.
- Firewalls in the form of non-linear impedances to prevent uncontrolled propagation of disturbances between different parts of the electricity network
